  • Orange is the New Black Season 5 Leaked Over a Month Prior to Official Release Date

The first 10 episodes of Netflix’s original series Orange is the New Black’s long-awaited fifth season have been leaked online by a cyber-criminal collective.
The hacking group, which goes by the handle ‘Thedarkoverlord’, allegedly stole the episodes from Hollywood-based ADR (additional dialogue recorded) studio Larson Studios late last year, according to piracy-news site TorrentFreak, and threatened to upload them to file-sharing site ThePirateBay unless Netflix payed them an undisclosed sum of ‘ransom’ money.

Following through on their threat, they released the premier episode of the series last Friday, after Netflix allegedly failed to respond to their demands, later uploading the following nine installments in their possession.

‘Thedarkoverlord’ explained in an online post that they only obtained the first 10 episodes of the season because the cyber-attack was carried out before the final three installments were available.
The hacking collective claim to have a plethora of unreleased shows from major television networks ABC, Fox, National Geographic and IFC — all of which are being similarly blackmailed.

In a statement made on Friday, Netflix said: “We are aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”

The latest season of  Orange is the New Black was not meant to be available until June 9th, just over a month from now. Whether or not Netflix will consequently move up the official release date, is yet to be known.

According to several reports, ‘Thedarkoverlord’ hacking group is fairly notorious, having claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in recent months; one, which targeted construction company Pre-Con Products Ltd, involved the leak of contracts and a video which is said to show a fatal accident. The collective has also targeted medical organizations and leaked data obtained from Gorilla Glue

Commenting on the incident, Orange is the New Black actress Alysia Reiner (who plays Natalie Figueroa) said, “It speaks a lot to this moment in time, where many of us feel we’re held hostage, and terrorism seems to be a way that’s working,” in a video by The Washington Post [featured below].
