Egyptian shaabi DJ, Ahmed ‘Zola’ Mohsen, passed away this week after being caught in gunfire during January 25th anniversary unrest in the area of Matareya. He was just 21.
The DJ and producer has had a whirlwind few years as the rise of shaabi and mahraganat music saw him perform across Egypt, as well as abroad, alongside friends and band-mates, Alaa 50, Amr 7a7a and Sadat.
A Facebook page commemorating his death has racked up over 7000 likes in the matter of days and has very firmly pointed the finger of blame at the Ministry of Interior, who in turn have blamed pro-Muslim Brotherhood protestors.
One message from the page read, “Music was his life. He died from police gunfire, though he was neither a Muslim Brotherhood nor a terrorist. He has no political affiliation."
