While few would argue against the statement that football is Egypt’s favourite pastime, it’s rare that the increasing amount of female involvement in the sport is ever highlighted. But one particular female football fanatic has been making waves – not as a player, but as a pundit.
Dentist by day, pundit by night, Manar Sarhan might be a name familiar to some diehard fans; having covered the sport she loves for Al-Masry Al-Youm and Fil Goal, she appeared weekly on CBC for the channel’s coverage of Euro 2016 and continues to write for other publications.
But, as with so many stories of Egyptian women breaking barriers, the road was by no means an easy one, as this AFP featurette shows. With a very respectable social media following, Sarhan’s stock continues to grow in what is a male-dominated field in a male-dominated country. Sarhan talks about her dream to craft her trade in European football
