  • Things to Do in Cairo This Week

    things13

Time to snap out of the New Year’s hangover, Cairo – time to get back on the horse that is Cairo nightlife, so to speak. Now, the first week of Januaray is usually pretty flat around Egypt’s capital when it comes to bars and clubs – hey, venues need recovery time to you know – leaving us with slim pickings for going out this week. Come to think of it, it may be a blessing in disguise following the usual NYE expenditure, but there are still some decent events to jump into, thanks largely to Cairo Jazz Club.

MARC WAHBA + AGUIZI & FAHIM + ABOU SAMRA @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Monday)

Though closed on Sunday, Cairo Jazz Club returns to its usual rotation on Monday and they’re not messing around. Big night, big line-up as Marc Wahba, Aguizi & Fahim and Abou Samra take turns on the decks.

    SCREWDRIVER @ RIVERSIDE
    (Monday)

After a busy festive period,  Riverside are set to continue the fine form that saw the Zamalek venue rise in the nightlife ranks in the second half of 2015 with  band that seemingly has an endless pit of energy to draw on in their performances, Screwdriver.

ESLAM EL SHA’ARY + HOH @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Tuesday)

Touted as a night for real music lovers only, Cairo Jazz Club are expecting people to shut their traps for this ‘quiet performance’. How they’ll manage to do that is up for debate, but what isn’t up for debate is the quality of musician on show – Hany Adel, Ousso Lotfy and Hany El Dakkak (HOH) and Eslam El Sha’ary.

    HANIA FANSA @ 3ELBT ALWAN
    (Wednesday)

The back end of 2015 saw 3elbt Alwan turn things up a notch with a stream of eclectic bookings and one of the Zamalek venue’s highlight events this week sees Hania Fansa dip into the alternative side of music – think Nirvana, Cornell, Silverchair, The Pretty Reckless and more.

    SEMAZEN @ THE ROOF
    (Wednesday)

Spiritual twosome, SemaZen, have been turning heads in their native Jordan as of late – so much so, that the band’s gig at the Roof in Maadi is the first of three in Cairo over six days. Combining Rainbow Songs, Sufi Chants, Reggae Anthems, Hindu Mantras, Goddess Chants and more, this is one of the more unique musical experiences you’ll find this week.
