  • Things to Do in Cairo This Ramadan Weekend

    ramadanthings

As we wind down another long, hot, sticky Ramadan in Cairo, attentions have turned to Eid – the whos, whats and whens of the beginning of ‘Sahel Season’, ad nausea, are the hot button topics of the week. Before then, however, we have a weekend of live music that needs attending to…

HASSAN RAMZY @ EL 7ANAFEYA, THE TAP EAST
    (Thursday)
    hassan ramzy
A smooth and smouldering guitarist isn’t your typical Ramadan entertainment, but then the Tap East has been doing the seasonal stuff a little differently. The New Cairo bar-come-restaurant-come-cool-place-to-be-seen sails into the last weekend of its kheima, El 7anafeya, with Hassan Ramzy.
    __________

    SHABAAN ABDEL REHIM @ RIVERSIDE
    (Thursday)

We move onto a figure who continues to serve as a fashion icon for many; the man, the myth, the legend that is Shabaan Abdel Rehim, who performs at Riverside’s Ramadan tent – and what better way to kick off the weekend with man that has come to be affectionately known as ‘Sha3bola’?

MAHMOUD EL LEITHY @ EAT & BARREL
    (Thursday)

Mahmoud El Leithy has been a man in demand this Ramadan – seriously, he’s been everywhere – and ‘The Human Whoot in the Velvet Suit’ (a new nickname we just gave him on account of the above photo being used throughout the month wherever he’s performed) sets Eat & Barrel‘s weekend rolling – get it? Because barrels roll and stuff, you know? No?
    __________

    WUST EL BALAD @ LANTERNS
    (Friday)

Away from the kind of loud and flashy shaabi music that usually dominates Ramadan tents, Uptown Cairo‘s popular kheima, Lanterns, is playing host to one of the highlight music events of the weekend, in the form of a Wust El Balad gig, who promise that they will not trash the stage in 70s rock style despite what the above photo suggests.
    __________

    EL NAFIKHA @ WESTOWN HUB
    (Friday)

Fighting the good fight against those that worship at the temple of that evil, poisonous thing people call ‘electronic music’, increasingly popular collective, El Nafikha, have been making the nerdy kid of the music world, brass instruments, cool again and appearing in Orange commercials in their spare time. This weekend, they perform at Westown Hub. Wearing a nice, light shoe that allows you to tap your foot freely is advised.

ABDEL BASET HAMOUDA @ INTERCONTINENTAL CITYSTARS
    (Friday)

    (Friday)
    13445673_1066489020100172_1122419884265296001_n
ROOM Art Space has been a refuge for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Ramadan and this weekend, the increasingly popular Garden City cultural space hosts another unique act in the form of the Sorour Project. The Alexandra natives are a hit in their native seaside town, thanks to their unique fusion of music.

    (Saturday)
    13435490_282436978774191_2706747906828451522_n
Ha! A band called the first floor (El Dor El Awal) playing a gig on a rooftop (El Sat7)! Hilarious! What? Really, no? Alrighty, well the aforementioned El Dor El Awal are the last band to take to the stage as part of the special Mawaweel X El Sat7 series – the lovechild of Cairo Jazz Club Agency’s Mawaweel festival and Darb 1718‘s Mazzika X El Sat7 series.
