  • Mohamed Aboutrika: Legendary Footballer Put on Terror List

With Egypt having kicked off their African Cup of Nations campaign this week, football is front and centre for most of the country’s population right now. But today, news has emerged that one of Egypts most celebrated footballers, Mohamed Aboutrika, has found himself on a terror list for his alleged links to the now banned Muslim Brotherhood.

The move has been almost four years in the making; the saga began in 2012 when the former Al Ahly player publicly endorsed Mohamed Morsi’s presidential bid. In 2015, the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year then had assets and shares in several companies seized, with authorities alleging that he had been funding the MB.

What the move means for Aboutrika is that  he is likely to face a travel ban and have his passport and further assets frozen. Speaking to the BBC, Aboutrika’s lawyer has said that the move was “contrary to the law” and that the man that has come to be known by football fans as The Magician has “not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him.”
