  • Egypt at the Special Olympics: Why Aren’t We Making More of a Big Deal?

    SO1

While everyone has been busy celebrating/mocking the New Suez Canal over the last few weeks, history was being made by Egyptians elsewhere – in Los Angeles to be exact. This year’s Special Olympics were possibly the most highlighted in its history. Everywhere, that is, except for Egypt – a country that produced a total of 62 medal winners across both individual and team sports.

I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty impressive and I personally can’t think of a single reason as to why we shouldn’t be celebrating – I was stuck on the Me7war almost every day last week because Zamalek fans were lighting fireworks, singing and generally being loutish to mark their win of the Egyptian football league and these guys get nothing?

We should feel proud. We should at least show them the recognition they deserve – some of these guys are world champions. They deserve large billboards on October Bridge. They deserve T.V. commercials. They deserve something. They at least deserve to be known. Salute these guys and gals with us – ladies and gentleman, your champions.
