  • Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend

    things-16-march

We’re not sure we can use the phrase ‘big weekend’ too many more times before losing credibility in our weekly event roundups, but, seriously, guys – a big weekend awaits across Cairo’s bars and clubs, with St. Patrick’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries and openings lighting up the next three nights. #BigWeekend

WHERE’S MY LEPRECHAUN @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Thursday)

Historically, St. Patrick’s Day has been a firm favourite at Cairo Jazz Club when it comes to misappropriated occasions and this year is no different, with the aptly named Where’s My Leprechaun; a green-tinted night that will see Malak El Husseiny, Funk OFF, Minus T and Omar El Sabh providing the soundtrack to what will almost certainly be a messy evening.

JAMESON CELEBRATES ST. PATRICK’S DAY @ CHEERS
    (Thursday)

There’s more St. Paddy’s Day fun over in Maadi, meanwhile, as the very Irish Jameson takes over Maadi bar, Cheers. This is not a a mere branding exercise, though; the Amr Hosny and Ahmed Harfoush bar will be awash with some expertly conceived Jameson cocktails, while live music and some ‘surprises’ round off what’s shaping up to be a night the Irish would be proud of.

    (Thursday)

After playing their first gig together last year, many believed Egyptian super-band, HOH, to be a one-off, but Wust El Balad’s salt-and-pepper hunk, Hany Adel, Egypt, Massar Egabri front-man and general cool-dude, Hany El Dakkak, and the man who many consider to be the ‘best guitarist in Egypt’, Ousso Lotfy, have been gigging regularly. This weekend, they perform at 19 at Uptown Cairo’s Clubhouse – the first of three consecutive Thursday-night gigs at the bar.

HOUSE SESSIONS BY NACELLE @ THE TEMPLE
    (Thursday)

Following Nacelle‘s announcement that this was to be the last season of House Sessions, it would be easy curl up into a ball and stare blankly into the distance (like so many post-House Sessions ‘downer’ mornings) and wonder why the hand that had fed you for so long would smite you down. But that’s not the Nacelle way. There’s two more to go, with this week’s edition welcoming Subb-An and In2Deep, plus I Love Nacelle and SANDBOX aren’t too far off either…

    (Friday)

We’re not too sure how DJ Fuzzy feels about working on his birthday, but he and his partner-in-crime, Ayman Nageeb, seem to enjoy this whole DJing thing, so this weekend’s edition of Riverdeep is looking like a special one – not least because the Cairo duo will be joined by peers and friends, Junior and Fairouz T – two guys who are no strangers to Zamalek venue, Riverside. Happy Birthday, Fuzzy!

Back 2 Basics‘ epic third anniversary celebrations kick off this weekend, with the B2B clan doing what they do best – day parties. With plenty of music lined-up for the the three-part shindig, the celebrations start as they mean to go on, with Noir set to headline the party at Fairmont Nile City’s Skypool. The man who’s arguably B2B’s biggest ever booking will be joined on the line-up by M.Fayek, who’s been on the rise in recent times, and one of the most in-demand duos right now, A-Squared.

    (Friday)
    12439394_1226018194093014_1468059864326206045_n
Clearly three is the magic number this Friday, with another feverish evening at Cairo Jazz Club set to host three of Cairo’s finest in SHawky (with a capital H), Nader Tahawy, who celebrating one year of gigging at CJC last month, and Omar Sherif, who’s at Jazz so often that we’re starting to think he lives there. Also, has anyone else been enjoying the Friday Fever artwork lately?

OPENING WEEKEND @ THE TAP EAST
    (Friday/Saturday)

The Tap’s slow but sure-footed invasion of cross-Cairo nightlife kicks into action this weekend, with the opening of the Tap East. The New Cairo-located bar-come-restaurant-come-music-venue is announcing itself to the world on Friday with a private party from 1PM that will see Dave Matthews cover band, Raw Acoustic, DJ Moez, Screwdriver and the always excellent Tamer Auf perform. On Saturday, meanwhile, the bar will be open to the public for the first time – an occasion that Funk OFF and Ramy DJunkie are charged with bringing to life.
