  • Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend

    thingsg

Have we all got over the whole EgyptAir thing yet? Yeah, ok cool – because a rather interesting weekend awaits, thanks to Nacelle, Cairo Jazz Club, the Temple and, of course, the long awaited 2016 edition of all art weird and wonderful, D-CAF….

D-CAF OPENING CONCERT @ AL HORREYA GARDEN
    (Thursday)

After weeks of teasing, this year’s edition of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival is set to officially launch with the help of two of the most talented female artists in the Middle East right now – Egypt’s own Dina El Wedidi and a woman that many refer to as Morocco’s Queen of Rock, Khansa Batma.

    CABARET NIGHT @ THE TEMPLE
    (Thursday)

A whole world away from the D-CAF, but no less Downtown-y in spirit, Nile-side Giza venue, the Temple, is rolling back the years for a quintessential Oriental experience, with a modern touch. The Oriental comes courtesy of in-demand belly-dancer, Amie Sultan, and the modern touch comes via DJ Lyon Avakian.

EAT TO THE BEAT @ EAT & BARREL
    (Friday)

Weekly bazaar of food, drink, music and sunlight, Eat to the Beat, is doing things a little differently this time round. While Eat & Barrel‘s decks have been largely taken up by Egyptian talent, this weekend, Spanish DJ, David Herrero headlines – though Egyptian talent is still on the table in the form of SHawky – before you say anything, the ‘H’ is meant to be capital.

DISCO 7AMRA @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Friday)

Now that you think about it, there’s a lot of Oriental touches across this weekend’s events, even at Cairo Jazz Club, where Disco 7amra (love the name) welcomes underground Arab music twisters, Disco Misr, taking to the booth, before A-Squared put things on an even keel with some indie dance and tech house.

FAMJAM @ ROYAL CLUB MOHAMED ALY
    (Saturday)

Probably the most talked-about event of the weekend comes courtesy of Nacelle, who – inspired by the roaring success of Funk N Pop, have set-up another pseudo-festival, but with a family-friendly spin. FamJam welcomes all to Royal Club Mohamed Aly for a day of music, games, food and film screenings, as well as drinking for the grownups.
