Big things await this weekend across Cairo’s nightlife scene, with Nacelle, Electrum and even Riverside turning things up a few notches - a new bar is opening, too.
STUDENT DJ 2014 SEMI-FINAL: MARWAN AKL VS NOUR FAHMY
And then there were four. From twenty hopefuls, to ten finalists, to four semi-finalists, we’ve arrived at the shark-infested deep end of this year’s Student DJ competition. Friends will be lost, dreams will be shattered and a man who goes by Aeroplane will be high on the line-up as the headliner. The highlight? Tamer Auf opens.
RIVERDEEP @ RIVERSIDE
(Thursday & Friday)
Having opened as slick boutique hotel/restaurant/bar, Riverside have learned the hard way that DJs rule all in Cairo, despite the Zamalek venue’s efforts to introduce a true lounge experience with live music. This weekend, the third and fourth editions of recently launched series, Riverdeep, sees Mohasseb take the reigns on Thursday, before Gawdat lead the charge on Friday.
EAT & BARREL GRAND OPENING
We always welcome new bars with open arms (and damaged livers) and the latest addition to the nightlife scene is Eat & Barrel in Giza. Wait a minute – an open-air bar on a boat? Rustic with bohemian touches? Natural wood finish with plants and greenery? Gourmet food? Entertainment that clearly isn’t in sync with the concept? Isn’t there already something like that in Zamalek? Maybe no one will notice.
NACELLE: INVENTING @ THE TEMPLE
Oh Nacelle, you cheeky tease! Once again, you’ve kept Cairo’s clubbers on tenterhooks as they await the announcement of something special and once again it’s the same, but different, but the same. You know what they say, though; if it ain’t broke, name it something else and over-hype a guy you’ve already booked before. Lol, jk – see you there.
ANTHONY STANCO ENSEMBLE @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
The token live music event of this riveting piece of literature comes courtesy of Cairo Jazz Club, who welcome the Anthony Stanco Jazz Ensemble; a collective that has more musical credibility than everyone on this list put together. Unfortunately, this event will go below the radars of most of the city’s nightlife fiends because there’s more glory in pushing buttons than there is in pushing keys.
