It’s been a long, chilly week in the capital, but it’s shaping up to be a bumper weekend of music, drink and even food across Cairo’s bars, hotels and venues – musical battles, experimental music from Europe, brunch, fashion and much more awaits us. See you on the other side.
STUDENT DJ 2014 BATTLE: BASHAR GALAL VS CHIATI @ FAIRMONT NILE CITY
After a string of confusing scheduling changes, the first battle of this year’s Student DJ is upon us as two young, fresh-faced hopefuls go to war atop Fairmont Nile City. Chiati goes up against a man we’ve had on CG Tunes before, Bashar Galal.
FUSED @ DARB1718
Two Danes, an Austrian and Pole walk into a Egyptian cultural centre sounds like a joke. But it isn’t – it’s Fused; a collaborative effort that the guys at Cairo Jazz Club Agency have helped put together for a big night of musical experimentalism at its finest at Darb 1718. There’s an Egyptian in there, too.
DJ RORO @ GRAFFITI
DJ Roro keeps on the down-low,
But the music he know(s)
Will keep you saying YOLO,
So don’t be a no-show.
THE FRIDAY BRUNCH FT AHMED HARFOUSH @ FAIRMONT NILE CITY
If you wake up the next morning after Student DJ in the Fairmont Nile City bathrooms, the perfect hangover cure awaits you at Napa Grill – a buffet brunch as well as the smoothest cat in Cairo, Ahmed Harfoush, who’ll melt away your headache or make it worse, depending on how you feel about jazz covers.
BBQ BRUNCH @ CAIRO MARRIOTT HOTEL
(Friday & Saturday)
Yes, more brunch! And the only thing better than one brunch is two brunches at Cairo Marriott Hotel‘s Garden Promenade Cafe, where a buffet that has more than just barbequed meats to offer as well as live music and kids’ activities.
RIVERDEEP FT. MOHASSEB @ RIVERSIDE
Hmm. Riverside is more accustomed to the softer musical stylings of Ahmed Harfoush, Ellie of London and the like, so big, bad Mohasseb‘s progressive house sets at RIVERDEEP may come as a bit of a shock to the system for regulars of the Zamalek Nile-side nightspot. Tough crowd.
CAIRO FASHION FESTIVAL III @ CAIRO FESTIVAL CITY
Fashionistas across Cairo are prepping their fiercest outfits and cattiest looks for the third edition of Cairo Fashion Festival, where you can shop, catch some live music and watch men and women who are better looking than you walk up and down a runway wearing clothes you probably can’t afford at Cairo Festival City.
SALSA NIGHT @ EL MOJITO
I was recently exposed to the world of Salsa thanks to Conrad Cairo Hotel‘s El Mojito and it’s every bit as intense as I’d imagined ; two passionate, sweaty bodies orbiting around each other at high speed, only to be pulled, slammed, twirled and thrown against each other in the name of love, sex and impressing women.
