  • Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend

Yes, it’s cold; yes, you can’t feel your toes; and yes, I’m sitting here typing with gloves on. But, hurrah, the weekend has almost arrived and it’s supposedly meant to be a few degrees warmer over the coming days – reason enough to dive headfirst into the mishmash of weird, wonderful and the what-the-hell-is-this that we call Cairo nightlife.

    DAVID MAYER + ALY B @ ZIGZAG
    (Thursday)

In one of the most hyped events of the weekend, Downtown’s Zigzag has teamed up with Pacha Sharm and KEINEMUSIK, to bring one of the most unique DJs in Europe right now, David Mayer, to Cairo, on a night that will also see Aly B roll up his sleeves for opening duties. Mayer’s techno and deep house sets are works of beauty.

TEMPLE CLUB SERIES FT EDU IMBERNON @ THE TEMPLE
    (Thursday)

Alternatively, the Temple has secured its own big booking. After debuting two weeks ago to generally positive reviews, the Nile-side Giza venue’s new bi-weekly series, Temple Club Series – keep it simple and straight to the point, we like that – is back, with Edu Imbernon and Cairo’s own Misty on the decks.

    TRIPLE X @ LE DUPLEX
    (Thursday)

Having moved into the space once occupied by Buddha Bar at Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah, Le Duplex has been slowly but surely finding its footing in this crazy game called Cairo nightlife. Questionable name aside, the first of two events at the bar this weekend sees some of the best young DJ-ing talent in Cairo take to the decks – Justa Panda, kidmim; and Akladios.

    FUNK N POP @ ROYAL CLUB MOHAMED-ALY
    (Friday)

You’ve got to admire Nacelle‘s determination and complete disregard for forces beyond our power. Weather permitting, this weekend’s Funk N Pop isn’t the boasting the biggest line-up we’ve seen at the all-day, outdoor party-come-mini-festival, but quality trumps quantity and there’s fistfuls of the former, withe likes of Aly Goede, Omar El Sabh and Habiba among the performers.

NU EL SHERIF + SEBZZ/BAHER @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Friday)

If y’all still have any energy left after Funk N Pop, it’s recommended that after-party explorations should head in the direction of Cairo Jazz Club, who have a tasty line-up in store. First up is a DJ we all need to get to know better, Nu El Sherif – firstly, because as an active female DJ, she’s a rare bread and, secondly, because she has amassed quite the following along the Red Sea. Nur will be followed by DJing brothers-in-arms, Sebzz and Baher, who take over for a back-to-back sets.

    HESHEK BESHEK @ GU BAR
    (Saturday)

While many are of the opinion that Saturday’s are for wholehearted, home-based antakha (yours truly included), Gu Bar‘s surprisingly and increasingly popular weekly night of all things Oriental, Heshek Beshek, has a double-whammy of performers in the shape of Abd El Basset Hamouda and Sally Khalil, who both look like the villain and damsel in distress respectively from a movie poster.
