  • Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend

    things15

Cairo’s bars and clubs are stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. With discontent rumbling beneath the outcome of the constitutional referendum and January 25th coming up, DJ what’s-his-name playing at that club you like may seem trivial. But let’s be honest, we’re very much entrenched in an air-headed generation that plays by one rule; no conscious and active awareness of the impending doom that is the the future of Egypt, no problem!

FIFTY SHADES OF NIGHT: CHAPTER II @ KATAMEYA HEIGHTS
    (Thursday)

Back 2 Basics are kicking off their 2014 with the second edition of 50 Shades of Night and have enlisted the help of local favourite, Shady Ezz, and Russian duo, Going Deeper, giving me plenty of room for crass and immature sexual innuendos. But I’m far too classy a guy to have fun at the expense of our Vodka-loving guests.

    HUERCO S. @ VENT
    (Thursday)

You probably haven’t heard of Brian Leeds or his musical alter ego, Huerco S. That’s your bad, because the US DJ/producer is hot shit right now. Credited as a trailblazer of the newly-emerging, down-tempo, lo-fi genre ‘outsider house’, his debut LP, Colonial Patterns, received positive reviews at the end of 2013. Mr S. kicks off a mini-tour at VENT before jetting off across Europe.

    ELECTRO HOUSE @ O BAR
    (Thursday)

Fairmont Nile City’s resident drink-n-dance hub, O Bar, welcomes back Amr Hosny for another edition of Electro House. Even at the ripe old age of BLEEP, Hosny remains one of the most active DJs in Cairo, and will undoubtedly rock out with his BLEEP out well into senility. I don’t think there’s anyone in Cairo that doesn’t want to see that.

ELECTRUM RECORDS SHOWCASE @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Friday)

The DJ factory that is Electrum Records is taking over Cairo Jazz Club this weekend with three local talents in their back pocket; Mostafa Emad, Seif Bibars & Hassan Abo Allam. While some may not be familiar with the threesome, we’ll almost certainly be seeing more of these young, dumb and full-of-cum fellas in 2014.

NACELLE: HOUSE SESSIONS @ THE TEMPLE
    (Friday)

Earlier this week, we featured Aly Goede on CG Tunes, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I also discovered this week that I have an unexplainable Goede obsession; I just want to lightly wash his face with a warm, damp cloth and sing to him – is that weird? Tito can watch.

!!! BONUS ‘THING’ TO DO IN CAIRO THIS WEEKEND !!!

CAIRO INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR @ NASR CITY FAIRGROUNDS
    (Now – February 6th)

Contrary to popular belief, I can read. In fact, I quite like to read. Add this to my other hobbies (shopping, touching stuff and walking around with no real purpose or goal) and the Cairo International Book Fair is a little bit orgasmic for me. Now in its impressive 45th edition, it really is something Egyptians can be proud of. Kudos to AUC.
