Alright folks, let’s try and keep things steady till the weekend. The remnants of the last passing weekend might sill be imprinted on your respective livers and body-clocks, but this yucky, despicable thing they call Sunday-to-Thursday is just a passing phase that we’ll all get through together. Nonsense-intro-filler over. Here are the best events of the coming week.
URBAN SUNDAY @ THE TAP
So often the saviour of Cairenes as we battle through a collective and very real case of Sunday blues, DJ Miesh is the man in the hot-seat at the Tap for the Maadi bar’s most fly, gangsta and dope night, Urban Sunday. Because it’s hip-hop. And r&b. Dope.
ELLIE OF LONDON @ CHEERS
A far cry from the the sometimes uptight performers on the Cairo circuit these days, the always bubbly and fun Ellie of London (that almost rhymes, high-five) has been conspicuous in her absence in the last few months, but is set to kick the week off at another Maadi bar, Cheers.
NADER TAHAWY + MOHASSEB @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
He may not be the flashiest DJ in Cairo – he lets the music do the talking – but Nader Tahawy has reason to celebrate this week, as he marks one year since he first stepped foot in the Cairo Jazz Club DJ booth with a special night that will see Mohasseb also flex his muscle.
JAZZING BY THE RIVER @ RIVERSIDE
Speaking of Cheers, one of the bar’s co-owners, Ahmed Harfoush, isn’t in Cairo as often as he used to be, but has been doing the rounds in town for the last week or so, with his latest gig coming at a venue that his performances helped turn-around last year, Riverside, for the Zamalek’s haunt’s Jazzing by the River.
DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
Only a few weeks after paying homage to Bob Dylan, Cairo Jazz Club is rounding up an assortment of Cairo’s most talented musicians – including Hany Must, George Aboutar and Adam Awad – to salute the late, great David Bowie. Trademark Bowie face-paint recommended.
NOHA FEKRY + RAMI ATTALLAH @ SAIGON RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
There’s been a lot going at Fairmont Nile City recently – see TwøFøld – including a vigorous re-shake, of sorts, of Saigon Restaurant & Lounge’s entertainment line-up. One of the new additions to the schedule comes in the form of the glamorous Noha Fekry, who’s joined by a man who jazz purists will appreciate, the music genius that is Rami Attallah.
