Ramadan is so close, I can feel myself sobering up. But as we approach the oh so Holy Month, Cairo’s bars and clubs are going all out as we come to terms with a month without our homes away from home. Here are this week’s best events.
HEAVY PINS @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
It’s so typically Egyptian to assume that ‘mostawrad’ is always better and it applies to DJs and musicians, too. Every now and again a bar or event organiser will book a nobody and push them like they’re some sort of hidden gem, only for them to disappoint. This Monday, however, CJC hosts Greek duo, Heavy Pins, who are the real deal. Equally as exciting is the fact that SHawky is opening. Good night all round.
SWAG LEE & FRIENDS @ VENT
You may know him better as Zuli – KIK founder and one half of Quit Together. But when this man puts his Swag Lee face on, pandemonium inevitably ensues. There are enough ‘hip-hop nights’ around Cairo to keep fans amused, but none quite like this.
EUPHORIA FT. AGUIZI& FAHIM @ ALCHEMY
There’s not a lot usually happening on Tuesday, but Cairo 360 Editor’s Choice Award 2014 winner, Alchemy, is set to welcome back cheeky duo, Aguizi and Fahim, for the last edition of weekly bash, Euphoria, before Ramadan. With the event now only happening every two weeks, chances to suck at the the glorious teet of the Dokki bar.
SOOPAR LOX + DJ SAFI @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
It seems that CJC is going all out this week before taking the enforced Ramadan sabbatical, with Tuesday being a particularly big night of live music fans. The always excellent Oriental House band, Soopar Lox, who have been conspicious in their absence in recent months, are back. And just for shits and giggles, DJ Safi will be on hand for a typically-Safi set.
CLOSING PARTY @ VENT
To the shock of its legions of loyal fans, VENT will NOT be having a Ramadan kheima. The Downtown bar/art-space’s team will be taking a well-deserved break while monor renovations are made. This Wednesday, they sign off in style with a tasty line-up of familiar and not-so-familiar faces – not least, my eternal DJ crush, Minus T.
