If ever there was a time to hit one of Cairo’s bars and clubs for a self-loathing session of boozing, it’s now. For those that were looking for answers following the fishy constitutional referendum, you will invariably find them in the bottom of a warm Stella. But it’s not all boozing and chick-cruising; these are the same venues that highlight the positives of Egypt – amazing local talent.
Sunday sees the 2 B Continued Festival come to a close, and if something has been achieved with this year’s edition, it’s that there’s more to the creative arts in Cairo than DJ-ing and Oriental Fusion-ing – a word I just made up, because I’m a free spirit like that.
TOYBOYS @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
Cheeky chappies, Diya Nouman and Youssef Sami – aka ToyBoys – return to Cairo Jazz Club for a night of thumping beats and such. There’s not really much else to say about this, so I’m going to waffle on a bit till this paragraph reaches a third line just for the sake of a visual balance, you know?
EXPERIMENTAL NIGHT @ MAKAN
(Monday & Tuesday)
For those whose forays into Downtown Cairo don’t go beyond Tamarai, the thought of entering into the lair of culture that is Makan may seem a little scary. But if three well-turned out Danes can, why can’t you? Emil Cold, Jakob Overgaard Nielsen and Andreas Pallisgaard Hansen stand side-by-side with Nass Makan for one of the more unique musical collaborations you’ll see this month.
‘THE SQUARE’ SCREENING @ AL AHWA
Though it’s been on the festival circuit since last year, it’s only since the bright lights of Hollywood directed its gaze onto Egyptian documentary, The Square, that most Cairenes have stood up and taken notice. Banned from cinemas, and seemingly impossible to find online, Zamalek’s Al Ahwa obliges with a Tuesday night screening.
EUPHORIA FT. GAWDAT
I know what you’re thinking: Euphoria, again. This week, though, Alchemy has enlisted the help of Student DJ ’13 runners-up, sibling duo Gawdat, who’ll have to squeeze behind the cosy DJ booth. All of Cairo DJs sound the same? Bite your tongue, infidel.
