  • Non-Valentine’s Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend

    antthings

If, like me, you are hot on the outside, cold on the inside with the capacity to only love small animals, you’ll probably have rolled your eyes till they got sore this week, as we edge closer to the soul-grating black hole of douche-baggery that is Valentine’s Day.

But fear not fellow hollow-hearted loners; you can still leave your house this weekend without getting sucked into the whirlwind of cheap gifts and cheaper sentiments.

    MOLTEN AMBER @ ALCHEMY
    (Thursday)
Molten Amber is fairly straight forward; as always with Alchemy, there’s no crap, no gimmicks, just the sweetest golden liquids in the land, plus some art – thanks to a weekly Saturday art-brunch event – that you should by no means approach while swiggin’ away.

SHADY AHMED & GLASS ONION @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Thursday)

CJC welcomes soulful, fuzzy-headed singer-songwriter, Shady Ahmed, to the stage, before Cairo’s best Beatles cover band, Glass Onion, take over. They’re the best Beatles cover band, because they’re the only Beatles cover band. There, I said it.

    SHADI MEGALLA @ VENT
    (Thursday)

From the depths of Dubai’s underground scene,  Shadi Megallaa is popping up on Egypt’s own underground scene – that scene being comprised of VENT and that big, unfurnished, hash-smelling apartment you’ve been to before but can’t quite figure out when, whey or how.

LOVE & LOATHING IN CJC @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
    (Friday)

Less love, more loathing is the M.O. at CJC on Valentine’s Day, as the always game DJ Mohasseb, helps bring a sense of Cairo-normality to what is possibly my favourite theme of the year thus far. You can’t go wrong with Hunter S. Thompson.

NACELLE: HOUSE SESSIONS @ THE TEMPLE
    (Friday)
I’ve always thought the Temple to be a fitting venue for Nacelle – hundreds flock every week to worship and suckle at the musical bosom of the best DJs Egyptian money can buy. This week, Brighton-based DJ and producer, Maxxi Soundsystem, and resident, Baher, are your gods.

Usually I'd send you to the CG events calendar for more events, but it's mostly a nauseating rainbow of reds and pinks. Let's just walk away this time.
