Don’t believe the hype. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to begrudgingly endure the so-called festive season in Cairo this weekend. Yes, Cairo’s bars, clubs and restaurants aren’t going to miss the chance to charge you ridiculous amounts of money in the time of good will to all men, but there exists a few brave souls that have decided to side-step snowmen, reindeers, trees et al. A little bit of season cheer is bound to creep into all venues across Cairo, but here are five that haven’t put the focus on Christmas.
BLUES ATTACK @ THE TAP
Questionable boy-band-matching outfits aside, Blues Attack really do live up to their name. Funky is the name of the game on Thursday at the Tap, as the Maadi bar welcomes the always rambunctious band for a rowdy start to the weekend.
BASHAR + SALEH AMIN + ZEINA @ ZIGZAG
Don’t let the retro-hipster patter fool you – the godless folk at Downtown’s Zigzag care not for seasonal gimmicks. They care only for good music, which there will be plenty of, as Bashar, Saleh Amin and Zeina take to the decks.
EAT TO THE BEAT @ EAT & BARREL
Before heading off to one of the biggest Christmas events of the weekend, Ramy DJunkie is starting his Friday morning bright and early(ish) for this weekend’s edition of Eat to the Beat, as Nile-side Giza lounge, Eat & Barrel, continue their crusade of helping Cairenes getting a nice little afternoon buzz on.
TAMER AUF @ THE TAP
Tamer Auf does’t just play anywhere. The Cairo DJ and producer’s name isn’t plastered just over any walls, but he seems to have found a home at the Tap, where he returns this Friday for what should and hopefully be a night of Christmas-less music.
SALALEM @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB
You’d think that by Saturday, Christmas will be out of everyone’s systems, but no – there are some sick, twisted minds out there that buy into the whole 12 Days of Christmas malarkey. Not Cairo Jazz Club though; things return to normal on Saturday with the always reliable Salalem.
So there you go; you need not suffer this weekend. Alternatively, stock up on some essentials and ride the whole thing out in bed. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals.
