With the weather warming up, minds have already begun to wander to dreams of sun, sea and sand – but Sahel Season and the promise of other beachside shenanigans are still a little way off. For the time being, you’re stuck with Lady Cairo – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, for this weekend at least, as the old gal is serving up some mighty fine treats.
SADA THAT & MINUS T @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB (Thursday)
This month, Thursdays at Cairo Jazz Club have a deliberate tint of the alternative to them and one of the biggest weekend-kick-offs comes in the form of the debut of Hany Mustafa-led band, Sada That, with Minus T also taking to the stage – the first of two gigs for the versatile DJ this weekend.
ABOU SAMRA, BAHER & HAZEM @ WUNDER KIND (Thursday)
It’s been a busy start to 2017 for local favourite, Abou Samra, who, in addition to building audiovisual series, Anthems, has been popping up all across the nightlife scene. This weekend, he sits atop a line up at Wunder Kind that also feature Hazem and the brilliant Baher, the latter of whom will be back in action on Friday, too…
MINUS T & BAHER @ ZIGZAG (Friday)
With little time to prepare and rest, Baher is back on the proverbial horse for his second gig of the weekend – this time at Zigzag for the Downtown Cairo bar’s Club Night, where Minus T is also set to take to the stage for the second time in as many days.
Popular dame of the decks, kimdims; is back at Cairo Jazz Club this weekend – and she’s in very good company. Though not based in Egypt these days, DJ Mayounah always finds time to come home and will also be performing, with Sherif Nakhla rounding off the line-up.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you that DJs have it easy – once again, another of Cairo’s most popular DJs is performing for the second time in two days. This time, the man in question is Abou Samra, who headlines the fifth edition of Blurr Entertainment’s ROOTS, which will also feature Ash and Hafez.
The colourful playground of DJing that is Cochlea‘s Lastbreath is back for its fifth edition, with head honcho, Moodz, and Cairo-born Frenchman, Charlie Edmond – who impressed on CG Tunes with a recent set release – set to make a rare appearance.
JON KENNEDY @ THE TAP EAST (Friday)
A hotpot of dance and electronic music is on the menu at The Tap East this Friday, where British DJ, Jon Kennedy, is set to perform as part of a special Middle East tour that has already seen him flex his skills in Lebanon and will take him to Jordan and Palestine.
ISLAM CHIPSY, EL SWEASY & ALAA FIFTY (Saturday)
While many bars like to end the weekend on a ‘chill’ note to help us all ease into the work week, Cairo Jazz Club likes to take a different tack altogether – a decidedly rowdy one at that. Yes, the big dawgs of this weird and wonderful thing called electro-shaabi are closing the weekend at CJC – so you can blame Islam Chipsy, El Sweasy and Alaa Fifty for you being late to work on Sunday.
DJ SOTUSURA @ THE TAP EAST (Saturday)
The Tap East loves a bit of hip-hop and this week’s dose comes courtesy of French-Palestinian DJ, Sotusura. Fun fact: Sotusura and Jon Kennedy are actually good friends and collaborators.
These are, of course, just a few of the parties and events taking place across the capital this weekend – check out the Cairo Gossip event calendar for more.
