  • 10 Gigs to Go to in Cairo This Weekend

    thingsNOV29

It’s cold – like, proper, cold guys. But this is the weekend to throw caution to the winter wind, because there are some mighty fine gigs taking place across the city’s most popular venues, including The Tap(s), Cairo Jazz Club, Zigzag and even OPIA. Dig in.

THE WOODPECKERS TRIO, HANYMUST & MINUS T @ CAIRO JAZZ CLUB (Thursday)

It’s been a busy month at ‘The Jazz’ and that’s set to continue this weekend, which kicks-off with a triple-header of live music. First up is George Aboutar and The Woodpeckers Trio (pictured), who get things going with a set of acoustic rock covers, before singer-songwriter and indie darling, HanyMust, takes over. Rounding off the night is a DJ who refuses to conform to the laws of genre, the always brilliant and versatile Minus T.

AGUIZI & FAHIM @ THE TAP MAADI (Thursday)

Live music is being served up on Friday and Saturday at The Tap Maadi, leaving Thursday for house fans – and it doesn’t get much better than former Student DJ Competition winners and tech house connoisseurs, Aguizi & Fahim.

Meanwhile, over at The Tap East in New Cairo, it’s an all-Alexandrian affair, with two of the seaside town’s greatest exports. First up is pop-rock quintet, Karakeeb, who open for one of Egypt’s biggest bands right now, Massar Egabri.

    SALEH AMIN @ ZIGZAG (Thursday)

While Zigzag regulars have come to be accustomed to at least two DJs on Thursdays, the Downtown bar is putting all its chips on bar favourite, Saleh Amin, who is set to play – ALL. NIGHT. LONG.

One of the city’s top new bars has slowly been gathering speed with its weekly entertainment and the sky-high bar is kicking its weekend off with dame of the decks, Akladios.

Led by one of the most versatile musicians in Egypt – he can and does everything from hard rock to jazz – Adham Roshdy, Firehood have been gathering momentum in recent months thanks to a string of well-received gigs, the latest of which sees them take to the stage at The Tap Maadi.

Now well into its second season, Abou Samra’s popular audiovisual concept night is back at Zigzag and with it comes another tasty line-up. Joining Abou Samra at the Downtown bar this time round is Hafez, who he’ll be playing back-to-back with, while Zeina, Jorg and Pablo also perform.

    el dor el awal

Having taken the first step of their musical journey way back in 1999 – that’s 18 years in the game – El Dor E Awal can rightly claim to have been one of the first bands to fuse Oriental music with jazz – something that has made them a monthly fixture, and a popular one at that, at Cairo Jazz Club’s Saturday L’Oriental.

BLUENOTES @ THE TAP MAADI (Saturday)

    bluenotes

The Tap Maadi wraps up the weekend with its own bumper night of music, but with a difference.  Enduring local blues-rock band, Bluenotes, who have also been around since the late nineties are set to jam all night long.
