On Friday 12th of June something special is happening in that faraway land called New Cairo. The Music Tent is set to host possibly its biggest gig of the year, as Lebanese singer-songwriter, Yasmine Hamdan, takes to the stage for what is shaping up to be a special night of live music – and people are bouncing of the walls. Like, seriously excited.
And they have good reason to be. As one of the most unique music acts in the Middle East, Hamdan’s musical resume reads like that of an ethereal being that knows no bounds. An artist in every sense of the word, Hamdan first came to prominence, penetrating hearts and minds in the region, as part of indie electro-pop duo, Soap Kills, in 1997.
Since then, Hamdan’s career has taken her all over the world and has seen her collaborate with the likes of regular Madonna writer and producer, Mirwais, Marc Colin of Nouvelle Vague and freak-folk sibling duo, CocoRosie – if you’re a music snob like me, you’ll know that this is a big deal.
Friday’s gig marks another huge date for the Music Tent, who were awarded a 2015 Cairo 360 Editors’ Choice Award in the Live Music & Entertainment category – one of only three recipient of the award – and the inside scoop from our friends over at Cairo 360 suggest that this is going to be a huge year for the one-of-a-kind venue.
The guys at the Music Tent will also be running a cute competition that will give two lucky attendees the chance to meet the star of the night and snap a timeless selfie with her. All you have to do is take a photo of you and a friend with your tickets and tag @themusictentcairo and use the hashtag #TMT_YH.
