  • 8 Weekend Events That Have Nothing to Do with Shisha, Konafa & Shaabi Music

    non-ramadan-events-header

If live music is seasonal, then Ramadan is certainly the season of Shaabi music – one that sees the likes of Mahmoud El Leithy, Shabaan Abdel Rehim and Abdel Baset Hamouda are at there most glorious. But with these guys essentially rotating across Cairo’s tents and venues, everything else is in short supply – or that’s what we thought.

Here are eight events this weekend that aren’t dripping in Ramadan cliches. Treasure them.

    things-shereen-abdo

Singer-songwriter, Shereen Abdo, might just be Cairo’s best kept musical secret. There are few as charismatic on-stage presences as hers, but it’s her genre-defying approach to her eclectic range of music that makes her one of the most unique acts in the city.

DINA EL WEDIDI @ CAIRO OPERA HOUSE (Thursday)

    dina-el-wedidi

From one female musical force to another, Dina El Wedidi has had quite the career so far – one that has seen her weave in-and-out of genre after genre on her way to the top.

    mohammed morgan 587 315

Mohammed Morgan just about has enough time to catch his breath from the Friday night Al Hezb El Comedy performance before he’s back in stage. This time round, it’s at 3elbt Alwan, where he’s joined on the line-up by Mohamed Farouk and Waleed Abulmag.

NAR @ ROOM ART SPACE (Saturday)

    nar 587x315

If ever anyone tells you that Cairo’s collective musical appreciation is predictable and one-dimensional, then point them towards the increasing popularity of NAR – a group of Egyptian, Portuguese and Russian musicians influence by the medieval and folk music of Europe and the Mediterranean.
