  • The Five Ridiculous Reasons Saudi Arabia Wants to 'Ban' Pokémon Go

More bemusing news has come out of Saudi Arabia this week, with the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta calling on a ban of Pokémon Go, because the game is, wait for it...haraam.

The last two weeks has seen geeks and freaks, and everyone else in between, get swept away by Nintendo's game-changing app, as hundreds of thousands of players take to the streets to hunt for Pokemon. Personal opinions on the craze aside, the ban is preposterous on any level, as the reasoning proves...

    It Promotes Gambling...

Games of chance are, of course, prohibited in Islam, but does virtual currency of any kind count? The Committee certainly thinks so. Who knows; one day you're sending a screenshot to your friend about the Primeape you just caught in your kitchen, then the next, you're being thrown out of a casino after losing your life savings and making a drunken scene about it. It could happen.

    It Promotes Evolution...

This one's particularly good. The game and the Pokémons' in-game development have been deemed to be too similar to the staples of Darwin's theory of evolution - which is a big non-no apparently. The theory of evolution applied to a world of virtual, fictional creatures is interesting, though...

    It Promotes Polytheism...

We're not sure about you, but we haven't seen anyone worshiping Pokémon. That hasn't stopped Saudi clerics,  suggesting that the game promotes polytheism, however - the worship of more than one god. As with all the reasons so far, context doesn't seem to matter.

It's Full of Symbols from 'Deviant Religions'...

International Zionism and Japan’s native Shinto religion are just a couple of the 'deviants' whose symbols can be found all across Pokemon imagery. It actually kind-of feeds into initial conspiracies that suggested Pokémon Go was being used as tracking devices by some hidden powers-that-be Illuminati force. THEY'RE POISONING YOUR CHILDREN.

Saudi Actually 'Banned' Pokémon Back in 2001...

Yes, Saudi's beef, so to speak, with Pokémon Go actually touches on a larger beef that began with a 2001 edict that condemned Pokemon as a concept for all the above reasons. If you haven't face-palmed already, now would be a suitable time to do it.

In conclusion, here's random Pokemon gif we can't stop watching in the office. It's hypnotic.
