It's official; rainbows have been tainted in the Middle East forever. A school in Riyadh has incurred the wrath of Saudi authorities after painting a playful rainbow on its main building.
The Talaee Al-Noor International School was ordered to paint over the colourful mural in cold, pale blue after Saudi Arabia’s Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice - the same 'religious police' that has banned women smoking and Valentine's Day - decreed via Twitter that the rainbow is a 'symbol of homosexuality'.
In addition, the school was fined a whopping 100,000 Riyals - over 200,000LE - and one administrator is said to have been arrested. Naturally, Twitter erupted, with many rightly condemning the move for its sheer absurdity - though it has to be said that that there was a fair bit of support for it, too.
With rainbows being deemed 'gay', it'll be interesting to see how the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice intend to deal with reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in droplets of water. You know - actual rainbows.
